Wyoming Humanities Council, DBA Wyoming Humanities (WYH), is an independent 501c3 nonprofit organization and our state’s affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), a federal agency created in 1965. The NEH has affiliates—known as humanities councils—that promote the public humanities in all 50 states and 5 jurisdictions. WYH was the first state humanities council, launching in 1970. Our funding comes from the NEH and the State of Wyoming, as well as private sources including foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, and individual donations. We manage an annual budget of about $1.2 million and are a staff of five with offices in Laramie on the university campus and Jackson in the Center for the Arts.
WYH serves as a leader of the cultural and intellectual network of Wyoming by funding and supporting nonprofit cultural and educational organizations. We also design and conduct programs that address contemporary issues through close collaboration with individuals and organizations around the state. The projects we support include public presentations, conferences, museum exhibits, podcasts, documentary films, collections preservation, publications, reading and discussion groups, workshops, and lecture series.
Our purpose is to use the humanities—history, literature, philosophy, languages, linguistics, art history, law, religion, ethics, anthropology, sociology, political science, folklore, essentially anything that pertains to the human experience—to understand our past, explore our present, and plan for our future. Our mission is to use the humanities to strengthen democracy, expand the Wyoming narrative, and promote engaged communities.

The staff of 5 based in Laramie, Cheyenne, and Jackson are devoted to using the humanities to enhance the Wyoming narrative and promote engaged communities.
This is an exciting career opportunity for an enthusiastic professional with a broad range of skills to join WYH. The Deputy Executive Director will be second-in-command of the organization and immediately take over all programming, grants, and communications operations—managing a staff of three experienced professionals. If you apply, you should want to learn all aspects of the organization in order to assume leadership in under two years. This position will require frequent statewide travel and attendance at occasional evening and weekend events.
This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position preferably based in Laramie or Cheyenne, but other locations will be considered. Salary range is in the mid-$70s and includes an excellent benefits package and imminent advancement potential. The successful candidate will be a recognized leader within their current domain and possess expertise (or skills that easily translate) in a variety of areas including: outstanding written, verbal, and presentation skills; a substantial professional network in Wyoming or proven capacity to build one; event planning; passion for and ability to describe the usefulness of the humanities to many different constituencies; knowledge of federal and state funding advocacy and intricacies; fundraising and grant-writing; and above all a desire to lead the cultural sector of Wyoming.

- Experience with nonprofit boards and organizations, including strategic management, fiscal planning, governance best practices, and fundraising
- Experience with advocacy, development, marketing, and public relations
- Strong skills in writing and public speaking
- Ability to work with the public and strong interpersonal skills
- Passion for Wyoming; willingness to travel the state making connections and attending events
- Strong organizational and administrative skills
- Small group management experience and personnel management skills
- Demonstrated experience with fostering statewide partnerships and building constituencies
- Familiarity with state-of-the-art technology approaches; technologically savvy
- 5-plus (minimum) distinguished years in a senior position in a nonprofit organization, foundation, or government agency
- Advanced degree in a humanities or related field
